I developed a street mentality I didn't have while living in Cuba. Most of them had dead beat parents, I was surrounded by drugs and crime all the time. My family and I moved over to the US when I was 12, I was incredibly naive compare to the rest of the kids in my neighborhood. I grew up poor in Cuba, so did all my friends, but all of our parents were hard working people who valued education and respect. The difference between Cuba and the US is that if your family has lived in the US for generations and they are still poor most likely it is because they are people prone criminal behavior. Suicide rates are surging, and everyone keeps saying America has no poverty issue. I am sorry to unload this pent up frustration on you, but more people die from opioids than car accidents now. Pay day loans, late fees for phone bills and the fact that Corporations and the Koch brothers own Congress dictate a reality that most middle class Americans ignore. If someone doesn't pay a speeding ticket in 2-3 weeks, they now have a warrant. No other democracy looks people up for bouncing $100 checks. Their records follow them throughout their lives. We have the highest incarceration rate in the world because we throw poor people in prison for nonviolent offenses. Los Angeles is a whole city worth of homeless veterans, mentally ill, and even children. In Sweden, they have no real homelessness. We are not Canada, France, Japan, or Australia. People in this country suffer from easily cured or managed chronic illnesses and die because of substandard care. With all due respect, don't kid yourself. People are alienated because they are lonely, isolated, have no social capital, and are preyed upon by usurious corporations, the Prison industrial complex and a public that is taught to hate poor and working class people. Since the mid 1970s, working class wages have stagnated as working people work more and more hours. The lack of welfare supports causes a huge level of suicide, opiate abuse, and lack of family cohesion. I think the homelessness and difficulties faced by poor people in the United States is unique among Developed countries.
